Reverse Phone Lookup - 25 Tools Investigators Use to Unmask Unknown Numbers

By Lance Casey — Licensed California Private Investigator — CA PI #27617 — Updated Mar 2026

A reverse phone lookup is one of the fastest ways to identify an unknown caller, verify a subject's contact information, or locate a person who has gone off the grid. After 25+ years as a licensed private investigator in California, reverse phone lookups are a daily tool in my investigations — from skip tracing and process serving to harassment cases and fraud investigations. People change addresses without updating databases but rarely abandon a phone number they use daily, making phone data one of the most current identifiers available. This guide breaks down 25 tools investigators use to unmask unknown numbers. For the complete investigator toolkit see my Full OSINT Guide - Investigator's Edition.

Need a professional reverse phone lookup? I offer a licensed, DPPA-compliant reverse phone lookup service through Lance Casey & Associates. Results include carrier data, subscriber name, and associated address — verified and documented for legal use. Visit lancethepi.com for reverse phone lookup.

01
My professional reverse phone lookup service run out of Sacramento, CA. As a licensed California PI with CA PI License #27617 and 25+ years of field experience, I run carrier-level phone lookups that return subscriber name, associated address, and carrier data not available through free consumer tools. Results are verified across multiple professional-grade databases and documented for use in legal proceedings. When free tools return no results or unverified data, this is the service that gets answers.
02
A dedicated reverse phone lookup resource covering investigator-grade methods for unmasking unknown numbers. Covers free tools, carrier-level database strategies, and the step-by-step process a licensed PI uses to identify the person behind any phone number. A practical reference whether you are running your own search or evaluating whether to hire a PI for a more complex phone investigation.
03
PeopleFinders allows reverse lookup by phone number, returning the subscriber name, address history, relatives, and associated individuals linked to that number. One of the most comprehensive consumer-grade reverse phone platforms available. The historical address data tied to a phone number is particularly valuable for skip tracing cases where a subject has recently moved but retained their number.
04
Spokeo's reverse phone lookup pulls from hundreds of public data sources to build a comprehensive profile on the phone number owner including name, address history, email addresses, and social media profiles. The social media profile discovery makes Spokeo particularly strong for harassment and fraud cases where you need to build a complete digital picture of who is behind an unknown number. See my Full OSINT Guide for social media investigation methods.
05
TrueCaller is a global crowd-sourced caller ID database that identifies unknown numbers based on user-submitted data. Particularly strong for identifying spam callers, telemarketers, and scammers — numbers that appear frequently in complaint databases often surface with identifying information even when they are not listed in public records. TrueCaller's international coverage also makes it useful for investigating numbers from outside the United States.
06
SpyDialer is a free reverse phone lookup tool that searches name, address, and public record data associated with a phone number. SpyDialer also has a unique feature that allows you to hear the voicemail greeting of a number without calling it — a useful tool for confirming whether a number is active and associated with a specific individual before committing to further investigative resources.
07
ThatsThem allows reverse lookup by phone number, returning the associated name, address history, and email addresses linked to that number in public records. The multi-field cross-referencing capability makes it one of the most versatile free tools for building a complete profile from a single phone number. Running a number through ThatsThem alongside other free tools and comparing results is standard investigative practice. See my People Search guide.
08
WhitePages is a long-established reverse phone directory covering landlines, cell phones, and VOIP numbers across the United States. While the free results are limited, WhitePages is a reliable first-pass tool for quick phone number verification before moving to paid databases. The associated address and neighbor data returned alongside phone results is useful for surveillance preparation and canvassing operations.
09
USPhoneBook is a free reverse phone search tool covering landlines, cell phones, and VOIP numbers with no account or payment required. Returns subscriber name, associated address, and relative data linked to the number. A solid free alternative when WhitePages returns limited results — running the same number through multiple free directories and cross-referencing the returned names is a standard investigative technique.
10
NumLookup provides free reverse phone lookups with carrier identification, line type detection, and owner name data. The line type detection — identifying whether a number is a landline, cell phone, or VOIP — is particularly useful for investigations. VOIP numbers are commonly used by scammers and subjects trying to conceal their identity, and knowing the line type early helps determine the appropriate investigative approach.
11
CallerIDTest allows you to test what caller ID information a number transmits when it calls. Useful for verifying whether a number's caller ID matches the registered subscriber information — a discrepancy can indicate spoofing or VOIP forwarding, both common in fraud and harassment cases. Understanding how a number presents itself to recipients is an important early step in phone-based investigations.
12
FastPeopleSearch includes reverse phone lookup functionality returning current and historical residents associated with a phone number along with address history and relatives. The neighbor data returned alongside phone results is particularly useful for canvassing preparation — before conducting door-to-door inquiries near a surveillance location, having a pre-built contact list saves significant field time.
13
BeenVerified allows reverse lookup by phone number, generating a comprehensive background report including name, address history, social media profiles, criminal records, and relatives linked to the number owner. A subscription-based service that goes significantly deeper than free tools — particularly useful for harassment investigations and fraud cases where you need a complete background on the person behind an unknown number.
14
Intelius provides paid background check reports accessible by phone number that include criminal records, address history, and employment history linked to the phone owner. The criminal record component makes Intelius useful for cases where a subject's legal history is relevant alongside their phone identity — particularly in harassment, stalking, and fraud cases where prior criminal behavior is material to the investigation.
15
PhoneInfoga is an open source phone number intelligence tool that scans multiple public data sources and OSINT databases to gather information about a phone number including carrier, country, line type, and associated online profiles. A command-line tool used by professional investigators and security researchers — requires technical setup but returns data not available through standard consumer tools. Particularly strong for international number investigations.
16
Before using any specialized tool, searching the phone number directly in Google is always the first step. Enter the number in multiple formats — with hyphens, without hyphens, with area code, in parentheses — and search each variation. Numbers used in classified listings, business registrations, forum posts, and social media profiles frequently surface in Google results with identifying information attached. A simple Google search costs nothing and often returns results that specialized databases miss.
17
A reverse phone lookup returns a name — a professional people search builds the complete subject profile from that name. Once a phone number is traced to an identity, running a full people search surfaces current address, associated email addresses, relatives, and additional online profiles. See my People Search guide for the full cross-referencing process that follows a successful phone lookup.
18
When a reverse phone lookup returns a physical address, a professional reverse address lookup confirms current occupancy and surfaces all residents at that location. Cross-referencing a phone-derived address against current occupant data is a standard step in skip tracing and process serving cases. See my Reverse Address Lookup guide for the full process.
19
When a reverse phone lookup surfaces an email address associated with the phone owner, a reverse email search expands the investigation by identifying additional accounts and profiles linked to that email. Phone and email data frequently cross-reference to reveal a more complete digital footprint than either source alone. See my Reverse Email Lookup guide.
20
When a phone investigation identifies a subject's address, surveillance of that location may reveal associated vehicles. A DPPA-compliant license plate lookup on those vehicles confirms whether the registered owner matches the phone identity — a valuable cross-reference in fraud cases. Resources include my license plate owner lookup API and license plate information by state. See my License Plate Lookup guide.
21
For phone investigations that surface South Dakota addresses or SD-registered vehicles, my dedicated South Dakota license plate lookup resource covers state-specific lookup methods for cross-referencing vehicle registration against phone-derived identity data in that jurisdiction.
22
For phone investigations that surface Vermont addresses or VT-registered vehicles, my dedicated Vermont license plate lookup resource covers state-specific lookup methods for cross-referencing vehicle registration against phone-derived identity data in Vermont's unique regulatory environment.
23
When a phone investigation surfaces vehicle information, GoodCar provides vehicle history reports including owner records and title history that can be cross-referenced against phone-derived identity data. Useful for confirming whether a vehicle associated with a phone subject is registered in their name or under a false identity — common in fraud cases involving vehicle transactions conducted by phone. VinCheckup is also a solid vehicle history cross-reference tool.
24
In fraud investigations where a phone number is connected to a potentially false identity, SSN verification may be required to confirm the true identity behind the number. When a phone lookup reveals a name and date of birth, cross-referencing against SSN records can confirm whether the identity is genuine or fabricated. See my Social Security Number Search guide for permissible purpose requirements and legal methods.
25
The OSINT Framework includes a comprehensive phone number investigation section with links to specialized tools organized by data type — carrier lookup, VOIP identification, international number search, and more. When standard reverse phone tools return insufficient results, the OSINT Framework helps identify specialized resources for specific number types and jurisdictions. For the complete investigator toolkit see my Full OSINT Guide - Investigator's Edition. Need a professional reverse phone lookup? Contact Lance Casey & Associates for licensed, carrier-level results.
